Kawakawa, also known as Piper excelsum, is a small tree that is native to New Zealand and grows around the coast. The leaves that are used in Kawakawa are known to have healing properties and are considered to be a ‘wonder herb’ for their functionality. The heart-shaped leaf has a rich heritage of being used as a treatment for everything from toothaches to insect bites. At Tupu Noa, our Kawakawa can be used to treat skin conditions such as rashes, eczema and psoriasis, as well as to heal cuts and bruises. It is essential to add to your medicine cabinet and skincare collection, as it is multi-functional and can treat a raft of ailments.

The Kawakawa tree is considered to be a medicinal plant originally used by the Mãori, the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. It was used as a herbal treatment for cuts, and skin issues, as well as a tonic for health issues such as indigestion, and is now most commonly used to create balms and salves.

Its versatile healing and moisturizing properties make Kawakawa a skincare and lifestyle essential, particularly in colder climates when your skin is most likely to suffer from dryness and lack of moisture. Highly adaptable and functional, our Kawakawa healing balm and moisturizers are handmade in New Zealand.

Present in Kawakawa is the antiseptic chemical eugenol, and its moisturizing components help to soothe the skin and can help tackle the dry and flaky skin that can lead to eczema. Its antiseptic properties make Kawakawa ideal for using on cuts and bruises to prevent infection, as well preventing inflammation, and can be used to clean the skin out, as well as helping it through the repairing process.

Kawakawa can also help tackle Psoriasis, which is an autoimmune system where the immune system incorrectly targets healthy skin cells which can result in problems such as discoloration and can cause the skin to take on a scaly and dry texture. Within Kawakawa is myristicin, an immunosuppressant which can help prevent the immune system from attacking your healthy skin cells, and this can help tackle Psoriasis and eczema.

Kawakawa can also be used to treat common cuts and bruises as it can act as an anesthetic, as well as helping to treat and reduce the pain of insect bites and nettle stings. Its healing properties make Kawakawa honey an essential to have in your medicine cabinet as a healing balm, which can be used by adults and children.

Kawakawa is particularly useful to have to treat the typical cuts and bruises children acquire growing up, and the balm consistency makes it easy to apply. The Kawakawa can also be used to treat skin rashes, including nappy rashes, that are caused by skin irritation or allergies.

Our Kawakawa is a great investment to add to your skincare routine, and its multi-functionality makes it great for taking on-the-go to treat any bumps and scrapes that might occur throughout the day.
